Are externally fitted security shutters as secure as internal installations?

Why are internal security shutters preferred?

When installing security shutters, many specify an internal face fix. This places the “attack side” of the shutter behind the building envelope, meaning there are no visible profiles, fixings, or accessible components.

As a result, the shutter is less vulnerable to tampering or forced entry.

When is an internal fix not possible?

Certain situations may require an external installation.

This can be due to:

– immovable pipework and services
– laboratory or controlled environments
– manufacturing processes involving chemicals or airborne substances

In these cases, the shutter must be installed externally.

The challenge with external shutters

Externally fitted shutters are typically more exposed and therefore more vulnerable to attack.

This raises an important question:
Can an external shutter offer the same level of protection as an internal installation?

The solution – Xonar 900 Series

The Xonar 942, 943 & 964 are available as both internal and external face fix options.

Crucially, they are designed to deliver the same level of security regardless of installation type.

This is achieved through a unique design that prevents tampering with external profiles and fixings.

Independently tested and approved

The Xonar 900 Series is the only security shutter independently tested and approved by the LPCB to:

– LPS 1175 Issue 8

– D10 (SR4) rating

– Certification for both internal and external installations

This ensures consistent protection whichever version is installed.

Key features

Other innovative features include:

– Reinforced core to protect against specific attack methods

– Self-locking technology – no auxiliary locks required

– Reinforced extruded aluminium bottom rail

Approved to a maximum:

– width of 6,000mm

– height of 10,000mm

Applications

The Xonar 900 Series is ideal for:

– research facilities

– non-standard manufacturing processes

– critical national infrastructure

– government and military sites
